Where to start for New Coupon Users-Gathering & Organizing

Well I get asked questions all the time about where to begin, people wanting to start using coupons becuase of seeing other save or just out of necessity for their own budget needs. I am going to help you begin your stockpile of coupons and get you on your way to saving TONS of money every time you go to the store.

Gathering Coupons
-If you are wondering how to start your coupon stock there are tons of ways to do this
  • Buy a Sunday paper-in most areas there are at least 2 inserts every week(We'll talk about buying multiple papers later on) BUY AT LEAST 1 EVERY WEEK
  • Trade coupons-You'd be surprised how many people are willing to trade coupons in your own town
  • Join websites like Coupons.com , Weusecoupons.com , or you most likely can find a local coupon website by doing a google search for "*your state* coupon website"
  • Print coupons-This is a bit overwhelming to a new couponer as it's hard to figure out which coupons are worth the ink and which aren't (We'll go into this further later)
  • Ordering from a coupon clipper service or ebay.
    • Couponsbydede -cheap coupons, min. order of $3(with this min, shipping is $0.94)
    • Lorishas3kids - buying 20 of same coupons for cheap (Not for the beginner)
    • The Coupons Clippers -Min order of $3
    • Search for coupon clipping service and ton more options will come up
    • Ebay-people sell lots of coupons in quantities of 5-10
 Newspaper Coupons
When you first start couponing you'll be able to find all kinds of coupons in your Sunday paper, the most common inserts are
  • SS-SmartSource
  • RedPlum
  • P&G(Once a month these come out, normally at the beginning of the month and they expire at the end of that month)
Now with just 2 of those (the SS&RP) you can start building a pretty decent stock of coupons.

How to organize your coupons: Always do what works for you! Being organized means more savings
  • Filing System
  • Binder System
Filing System: This is commonly used by people that use online match-ups only
The filing system has many adaptable methods depending on your needs for the basic part of it, every week or every time you get coupon inserts they are filed.  You can have anything you file them in whether it's a filing cabinet or a carrying case.
  • You will want to date the inserts (Ex: 3/20) on the front cover when you file them or put a tab above them
  • This method does not cut individual coupons until needed, the whole insert is filed
Binder System: This system is commonly used by people that take their binder with them to the store or anywhere they shop
This system is the one I personally use and enjoy it a lot easier than having to find space to file coupons so I am kinda biased
  • Cut all coupons from inserts you will use or keep
  • File them in baseball card sleeve pages
    • Amazon.com
    • Walmart, Target (Found by checkouts where the trading cards are) usually $5-6 for 30 pages
  • Organize by type or isle
    • People can organize by their stores isles or by type (Frozen, Cans, etc)
The down side to this is when coupons expire and you have to go through your whole binder.  I started out with a 1" binder (Need to upgrade soon, hoping that's what husband gets me for Mother's Day)

I don't want the posts to get confusing so I am breaking them up so it's not too much info at one time.  The next post will concern Printable Coupons

Chocolate Cookie Recipe

   * 1 cup butter, softened
    * 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
    * 1/4 cup white sugar
    * 1 (3.5 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
    * 2 eggs
    * 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    * 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
    * 1 teaspoon baking soda
    * 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Directions

   1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
   2. In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugars. Add pudding mix, eggs and vanilla. Combine flour and baking soda; add to creamed mixture and mix well. Fold in chocolate chips.
   3. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned.

This is a recipe I found just doing a google search and I LOVE IT!  The dough tastes just like the frozen stuff that we all know we use to sneak and eat all the time.

-Ebay
-CouponDeDe
-Lorihas3kids (For lots of 20)

I've already got my list ready for this week minus some adjustments with the sugar for the higher value coupon, this is how I plan out my trip before I go shopping, but I do take my whole binder with me when I go incase there are deals they don't advertise or something is on clearance.

Wal-mart New Coupon Policy

Now for those new to couponing and having no idea where to start.  Most people have a wal-mart by them or close.  Wal-mart now has a VERY coupon friendly policy seen HERE  or better version HERE

Make sure to print it out and take it with you when purchasing things from wal-mart and using coupons because not all stores are familiar with new policies and will argue with you about it, with the policy in hand they don't have a choice really.

The BIG changes with this are:

YOU CAN:
-Use printable coupons as long as they have a barcode, says Manufacturer's Coupon, expiration date, and a remit address(the address walmart will send the coupons to, to be reimbursed)
DO NOT COPY COUPONS-This is illegal!
-Use catalinas (these are coupons that print at the register of grocery stores and sometimes drugstores
-Use a coupon for an item that is less than what the coupon is for, this is called an *Overage*
-Use competitor's coupons as long as they specify a price like $0.99 not ones that says 50% etc
-Use free coupons (they cannot be printables)

YOU CANNOT:
-Use checkout coupons for money off total basket purchase like $5 off total order
-Use printable coupons for free items

Now for an explaination on overages: Coupon Policy says :* Coupons MAY EXCEED THE PRICE OF THE ITEM. Change may be given or applied towards the cost of the basket purchase.*

-An overage is when you purchase something with a coupon and the coupon is for a larger amount than what the item is selling at and this produces an overage

I have personally used this with the recent $1.00/1 Degree deodorant on the trial size Degree deodorant.  Now I can do this because the coupon DOES NOT say Excludes trials etc.  Lately a lot of coupons says this so be aware before you pick it up and expect to get it free.

How the checkout works with the above items:

Degree Deodorant Trial size: $0.97
Use coupon $1.00/1 (Any)

At checkout this would produce a $0.03 overage, that you can either apply to your total basket purchase or if you aren't purchasing anything else you can receive the change back!

A lot of times you can get overages by finding items on clearance and using the coupons.

Price Matching & using coupons:

Now I haven't done this myself by here's some advice I have received about it.  Do all your price-matches first THEN put your coupons at the end of the transaction.

Expired Coupons

Just wanted to make a quick post and show what I spent the last few hours doing.

Every where I turned I was seeing coupons all over the house and most of them were expired which I had been meaning to get ready to ship to my friend who is stationed in Japan, so I finally sat down and did it.

After 3 hours this was the result:

Each box weighed 1lb 8oz!

I will be sending these to her at the end of the month since I still have 2 more weeks of the month I might be able to get more in there

Frugal?

I've seen everyone in the couponing world use this saying these days.  With the new series TLC is doing Extreme Couponing we all know what a stir it's caused in the coupon world.  I myself and one of these people that saw the first show and was hooked. I started couponing in Dec 2010 and don't see myself stopping. This isn't  a fad for me it's a necessity, feeding 7 people is hard and if I can get it for free and cheap and only use $200 a month I'll do it all I can.

Now frugal as defined on freedictionary.com says "practising economy; living without waste; thrifty"

Now just using coupons I don't think makes you frugal, it takes more!
I have always done things without realizing they were frugal.-Saved old containers to re-use for leftovers or husbands lunch
-Use kitchen towels instead of paper towels
-Even resorted to using cotton little boy underwear and plastic covers because I thought my son was going through too many diapers.(We already had the underwear so I bought the plastic covers) IMO it's the same as cloth diapering

I am constantly looking at ways to save money.

I'll be posting the deals and freebies I found and applied for today later! Stay tuned. :D

New stuff

Well I made a Facebook Fan Page for all my money saving dealings here: Money Saving Mama

I was already filling it up as soon as I made it with posts! Make sure to like it as everything I myself sign up for or use I will be posting there so you can get the same deals as I do!

I wanted to share today that it does pay to email those manufacturers and let them know how you feel about their product. I had read about people doing this and after emailing some companies and getting responses that just said we don't offer coupons at this time I gave up for a bit.

Well then I emailed Starkist, Dole, and Angel Soft and just told them how much we use only their products and how much we appreciate it. Well today to my surprise I got coupons in the mail from ALL of them

4-$0.55/1 Angel Soft coupons,
2-$0.75/2 Starkist pouches,
1-Dole $0.75/1 Jar of tropical fruit or pineapple,
2-$0.75/1 Dole fruit bowls or parfaits.
Recipes for using Dole fruit

All that just from writing a few emails!  So go into your kitchen write down the companies that you use a lot of product from and just let them know how much you use it and you enjoy it.  It doesn't hurt to just email them, the worst they can say is "We don't offer any coupons"...my advice don't ask for coupons just tell then you like their products etc etc.

Not just about savings

Well so far you guys have just seen the money saving part of the blog but today it's the other side, the craft side!

When my daughter was just getting hair I purchased some clips from Etsy.com and loved them...although Katherine wouldn't let me put them in her hair. After 5 minutes the clips disappeared from her head to never be seen again. I then realized I bet there's a huge market for this and I could do it in my free time(I had so much more back then). I began my  craft store on Etsy making baby shower items and clippies.  I then went to a full on clippie and pendant store and now I am on my clippie, duct tape, scrabble pin, and etc store lol.

Here are some samples of things I make:
                                                      Lined solid color clips
Duct Tape Checkbook Cover-Various Colors Available
                                                           Hello Kitty Wallet
Inside card slot of Hello Kitty wallet
                                             Bobby Pins-various colors and appliques(toppers)
                                              Scrabble pins-Up to 6 letters
                                             Coin Pouches-measure 4"x 4"-new!

Now I make all kinds of things and am constantly coming up with new ideas and ways to use existing things.  I was recently asked to do a craft fair in the town I live in and I paid for a booth etc.  This will be my first craft fair ever and was afraid of not being ready or having enough stuff to fill a table.  I have since been able to come up with enough things to do and am eagerly making items every night to be ready with enough product for this.  I also have a friend that has offered to sell my things at her craft fair at the end of the month.  So May 7th if you're local come see me and plenty of other vendors at the PYO builing! You can see more info on their FB page HERE

Grocery Trip-$53.17

So I did our bi-monthly shopping trip late last night at the local store that doubles coupons everyday.

I spent $53.17 after coupons. That was a total savings of $83(63%).  Steven(husband) and I walked outta there with smiles on our faces. I even got a catalina for a free gallon of milk(up to $3.59).  Now after hitting the local store I went to Wal-mart and got some other stuff that I knew I could get cheaper there.  I shoulda taken a picture from it as well but it took me forever to get all this lined up in one picture and I had frozen and cold stuff to put up....but overall I spent $74 at wal-mart.

So I filled up the cabinets and fridge for $128.  Not bad for a family of 7, now I'm just curious how long it will last. I know it will last 1 week at least but we need it to last 2 if possible.  Now there are some sales in the local ad next week I wanna get but it's things that will cost me under $10.  For now the only thing we need to complete meal would be meat.

I stopped myself from buying cookies and canned carrots.....guess why?  I told Steven that I could make them(the cookies) because I already had all the stuff at home to make them fresh! I also looked at canned carrots and they were $0.75 a can! Since we usually cook one can and then leftovers are either forgotten about or trashed that's not worth it. I just bought a bag of carrots at walmart for $1.08 and will cook them myself.  So am I leaning towards cooking more fresh, we shall see...we shall see.
